Shot in Wellington, New Zealand, the official trailer and poster have been released for I, OBJECT, the imaginative and heartfelt new feature from acclaimed New Zealand filmmaker Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show).
I, OBJECT features a stellar international and local cast including Karl Urban, Anna Faris, Skywalker Hughes and Bentley Storteboom, with Ethan Hawke and Jemaine Clement.
The newly released trailer offers audiences a first glimpse into the emotional and imaginative world of I, OBJECT – a place where everyday household objects spring to life through the eyes of a young boy.
I, OBJECT follows Tom, a 10-year-old boy with a vivid imagination. After the sudden death of his father, Tom retreats into a fantastical world they once shared – where faces come alive in everyday objects. But what was once a playful bond becomes an emotional refuge, distancing him from the real world. These companions guide Tom through his grief, helping him confront the loss of his father and, ultimately, rediscover his connections with the people around him.
Blending live action with imaginative animation, I, OBJECT is both visually original and emotionally resonant, exploring universal themes of loss, resilience and the importance of emotional expression.
Of the trailer launch, Umbrella’s General Manager Ari Harrison comments “I, OBJECT is one of the most imaginative and original films we’ve seen in quite some time. Andrew Niccol has created a visually inventive and emotionally resonant story that feels completely fresh and unexpected. With its out-of-the-box concept, international cast and universal themes of family and connection, we believe I, OBJECT is a film that will surprise audiences and resonate across generations.”
Producers Tim White and Polly Fryer say, “At its heart, I, OBJECT is about connection, imagination and embracing our differences. It’s a story filled with humour, heart and originality, and we’re excited for audiences to experience this world on the big screen.”
Director and Writer Andrew Niccol has said “My hope is that people enjoy the ride, but also maybe that they catch what I’ve caught, which is this, this kind of disease of seeing faces in objects. But I got a warning for you. Once you start seeing them, you can’t stop.”
With its unique premise, emotional storytelling and family appeal, I, OBJECT promises to be a cinematic experience that resonates with audiences of all ages.
I, OBJECT opens in New Zealand cinemas 23 July.
