Toy Story 5 held the top spot on its second weekend. On 102 screens, it picked up an impressive $782,466 to gross $2,402,415 and no doubt generate plenty of good word-of-mouth before the school holidays begin.
At #2 another kid-friendly franchise title, Minions & Monsters, began its run on 105 screens, taking $454,112.
The #3 spot went to a third – if horribly under-performing – franchise title, in the shape of DC’s Supergirl. It played 99 screens for $377,669.
Also opening their runs in the top 10 over the weekend were Lan Hongchun’s Chinese family drama Dear You, which took $151,522 from 27 screens, and Ahmed Khan’s Indian action comedy Welcome to the Jungle, which took $142,634 from 35 screens.
The highest-placed local title over the weekend was Caterpillar at #25, playing 19 screens and earning $4,752 for a total of $354,116.
The Time Traveller’s Guide to Hamilton Gardens played 17 screens, adding $4,123 to gross $196,561 and plakce at #27.
Now in its 17th week, Tenor: My Name is Pati was down to 4 screens, and added $1,476 for $1,130,803.
Also on 4 screens, The Weed Eaters took $278 for a total of $51,100.
Sgt. Haane played 6 screens, taking $535 to lift its total to $284,434, while Moss & Freud played 4, adding $280 for $15,657.
Four titles came back to screens over the weekend, three of them on single screens, and led by a single-screen 10th anniversary outing for Christian Nicholson’s fabulously lo-fi sci-fi This Giant Papier Mache Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy, which took $1,505 to push its lifetime take to $25,394.
Margaret Gordon’s Life in One Chord took $253 from its appearance on a single screen, totalling $90,935; and Ant Timpson’s Bookworm added $168 for $469,126.
Lisa Burd’s No Tears on the Field added $24 from 2 screens, to gross $57,445.
Openers this week include Jackass: Best and Last and Cats in the Museum 2: Treasures of Egypt, which is a reminder that Friday sees the start of the school holidays as well as this year’s Big Screen Symposium.
