NZ Box Office Report: 5 April 2026

On 111 screens, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened on top of the heap, taking $803,089 over the frist (and long) weekend of the school holidays for $894,886 including previews.

Ryan Gosling in space in Project Hail Mary continued on 114 screens, adding $749,089 to push past $3 million for a gross to date of $3,100,348.

The Magic Faraway Tree, playing the weekend’s high of 124 screens, took third place with earnings of $191,578 for a total of $471,879.

On 72 screens, Rebecca Tansley’s doco Tenor: My Name is Pati continued its strong run, ending the weekend at #8 with $78,263 in takings and a total of $796,111.

Placing at #11, the 10th anniversary release of Hunt for the Wilderpeople played 66 for a take of $36,508.

A #15, Holy Days added $12,815 from 49 screens, for a total of $531,594.

At #18, Thomasin McKenzie-starring Fackham Hall played screens, taking $8,587 to push its gross to $669,903.

Lisa Burd’s Taranaki-shot doco No Tears on the Field played 15 screens, taking $2,581 for $49,033.

Almost done in cinemas now, Avatar: Fire and Ash played 3 screens, taking $2,549 for a gross of $11,518,668.

Taratoa Stappard’s Mārama took $252 from 4 screens, and ending the weekend with a gross of $203,679.

Openers this week include Rebel Wilson’s Aussie musical comedy The Deb, and Kat Coiro’s romcom You, Me & Tuscany, with Lorenzo de Moor and Halle Bailey as the you and me.
