On-the-run, a traumatised, half-caste boy soldier, Haki, 15, is captured by Māori resistance forces preparing a last desperate stand against the British Imperial Army. Haki’s life is forfeit until Kōpū, 15, a girl-medium of a war god, saves him. Her tribe turns on her and she is imprisoned in a dry well in no-man’s land just as the battle commences. As Kōpū struggles to survive, Haki befriends his Māori captors and helps Kōpū escape. Then, as the Māori forces are massacred, the teenagers lead a group of children survivors from the battle only to face a final confrontation with Haki’s violent army officer father.
