Sick puppy: Is Australian cinema on its last legs?

When Red Dog was released in 2011 it opened with a solid but not spectacular $1.9 million on 245 screens, trailing The Rise of the Planet of the ApesHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Captain America: The First Avenger and ahead of Bad Teacher and Bridesmaids.

But the cinematic journey of the red cloud kelpie who roamed the Pilbara in the early 1970s was only getting started.
