The pattern of weekend podium placings we highlighted in last week’s report repeated again this week. The new arrival taking the top spot over the weekend this time was Bad Boys: Ride or Die, arriving on a modest 94 screens, and taking a similarly modest $423,702.
Dropping one spot to #2 was The Garfield Movie, on 107 screens, which added $221,015 to extend its earnings to $1,042,443.
Also dropping one spot to #3, and also on 107 screens, was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It took $151,468 to lift its total take to $1,281,454.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped out of the top three, to #4. On 98 screens, it took $147,171 – very close to Furiosa’s take – and has now grossed $2,753,543.
Although none of the four NZ titles currently in cinemas are new, their combined take over the weekend of less than $12,500 did seem to reinforce the point producer Steven O’Meagher was making in his (paywalled) Herald interview at the weekend that, for the most of the last decade, NZ has been funding a lot of local feature titles that local audiences aren’t especially interested in going to a cinema to see.
Joika held steady at #14, adding $9,560 for a total take of $123,791.
Down one to #24, The Moon is Upside Down added $2,420 to gross $119,441.
The Mountain added $310 for a total of $729,735, and The Convert added $164 for a total of $572,163.
This week’s new releases include The Exorcism with Russell Crowe, and little else that’s likely to provide it with any serious competition.
As always, huge thanks to Numero for the data that powers our box office reports.
