This weekend’s box office delivered a couple of reasonably rare occurences: a completely new top three and the sight of last weekend’s #1 title (André Rieu’s 2025 Maastricht Concert: Waltz the Night Away!) dropping not only out of the top three, but also out of the top 10, to close its second weekend at #20.
This weekend’s #1 was the final (maybe) instalment in the horror franchise The Conjuring, 12 years after the original film released. The Conjuring: Last Rites opened on 82 screens, topping the chart with weekend earnings of $833,302, and $933,633 including previews.
At #2, The Roses, a reimagining of 80s title War of the Roses, played a wider 105 screens, for a considerably lower return of $301,534 and $474,812 with previews.
At #3, Dominic Arun’s Indian title Lokah Chapter One: Chandra has already scored good reviews and box office on home turf, so the producers’ plan to use the title to kick off a new superhero franchise remain on track. Off a modest 31 screens, it took $115,345 on its opening weekend.
The Shayne Carter biopic, premiered in the NZIFF, Life in One Chord, released on 19 screens, taking $16,689 for a total of $55,056. That has pushed it past fellow doco The House Within, whose $89 take over the weekend lifted its gross to $46,574.
Workmates was down to 15 screens, taking $1,245 for a gross of $23,023
On 2 screens over the weekend, Kōkā added $422 for a total take of $241,098.
Tinā added a modest $158 from 2 screens, and has now earned $6,483,884. In its US release, it played better on its opening weekend (when it was limited to screens in centres with large Polynesian populations) than on its second weekend.
Titles opening this week include Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, directed by Simon Curtis and with lots of familiar faces and – also with familiar faces – the 30th anniversary re-release of Toy Story.
Our thanks, as always, go to Numero for providing the data that powers our box office reporting.
