NZ Box Office report: 6 October 2024

The Wild Robot hung on to the top spot over the weekend, but by one of the slimmest margins at the top of the box office chart this year. On 123 screens, its weekend take of $565,464 was only a few hundred dollars ahead of its closest rival.

Opening on 117 screens, Joker: Folie à Deux took $565,031, which represents a pretty fine achievement considering the wall-to-wall panning it’s had from reviewers in most countries.

Last week’s second-placed title, Transformers One, dropped to #3, playing 106 screens and adding $294,752 to bring its total close to $1 million.

Aussie family flick Runt arrived at #6, taking $122,194. Across the ditch, where it’s now into its third week, it’s entered the top 100 Aussie films of all time and earned over AU$4 million.

The was plenty of Kiwi fare in the mix this week, with Encanto Reo Maori placing highest, at #20. It took $8,541 over the weekend, to gross $212,063 to date.

On 41 screens, We Were Dangerous took $8,266 for a total of $560,293. Bookworm played 31 screens, adding $3,025 to lift its total to $460,234. It’s also now available to stream from a number of sites.

Stranded Pearl took $111 from 5 screens, for a total of $17,274.

Two local titles of recent vintage returned to screens over the weekend. Kathy McRae’s 2023 doco Pacific Mother took an impressive $1,376 from a single screen. Rachel House’s The Mountain played 2 screens, taking $157.

Recently-closed Brit-com Wicked Little Letters also returned, on a single screen, adding $938 for a gross of $1,746,250.

Christine Jeffs’ A Mistake is among the openers this week, with Ian Bonhôte & Peter Ettedgui doco Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story also among the new arrivals.
