NZ Box Office report: 6 July 2025

Dinosaurs still have legs, it seems. Opening on 109 screens, Jurassic World Rebirth won the weekend with earnings of $1,658,708.

Despite adding an extra couple of screens to play on 117, F1 The Movie wasn’t able to hang on to first place, but added $866,938 for a second place finish and a total so far of $2,603,731.

Down one spot at #3, How to Train Your Dragon, also increased the number of screens it played on, up one to 116. It earned $593,550 over the weekend to lift its total take to $3,924,640.

As it has done elsewhere, the Gerard Johnstone-directed M3gan2.0 continued to prove, sadly, that sequels aren’t always a great idea. On its second weekend, its earnings dropped by over 50% as it took $18,417 for a gross take of $166,311.

Kath Akuhata-Brown’s Kōkā was down to 47 screens, adding $34,998 to lift its total to $201,890.

The year’s highest earner so far, Moana 2, disappeared from screens, leaving Tinā as the year’s highest earner currently on release. 19 weeks into its run (a statement which very rarely gets written about a local title), Tinā added $5,647 from 14 screens for a gross take of $6,428,564. It’s agonisingly close to the $6,496,371 box office earnings of Whale Rider, but those extra $90,000 look to be just a bit too many to achieve.

Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds took $1,639 from 3 screens, and now has a total take of $227,314.

Indie drama The People We Love played 5 screens, earning $282 for a total of $41,245.

This week’s new arrivals include a couple of franchises previously exploited in many forms of media over the decades, including one that’s even older than the Jurassic franchise that tops this weekend’s chart. Superman is DC Studios’ first feature to make it to release. The week’s other fam-friendly release this week is animated title Smurfs, which lists among its voice cast the talents of John Goodman, Rihanna, James Corden, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh and Kurt Russell.
