2026 began as 2025 ended, with Avatar: Fire and Ash comfortably on top of the heap. On 111 screens, it added $1,187,151 for a total take so far of $7,797,900.
Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson in Song Sung Blue took advantage of the limited number of new releases last week to open in second spot. The film took $346,689 from 105 screens for a gross of $430,977 including previews.
Last weekend’s #2, The Housemaid, dropped to #3, taking $336,099 on the weekend for $937,574.
Not Only Fred Dagg placed at #8. Its weekend take of $75,580 from 39 screens lifting its total take to $224,005.
Prime Minister played 4 screens, earned $5,470 and lifted its total take to $1,084,953.
Pike River played 7 screens, adding $4,793 for a total of $1,427,127.
On a single screen local indie The Tavern took $411 for a total of $27,147.
New releases will again be thin on the ground this week, unless you’re a fan of Indian titles, in which case you have four to choose between – action thriller Jana Nayagan, action-comedy Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu, 1960s-set drama Parasakthi, and comedy-horror The Raja Saab.
