Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sped to the top of the chart on its opening weekend, taking $794,147 from a modest 96 screens to gross $1,080,979 including preview screenings.
Mufasa: The Lion King dropped to #2, playing 119 screens and adding $624,636 to lift its total to $1,736,931.
Also down one spot, to #3, Moana 2 played 120 screens, taking $488,653 to total $8,223,590.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim took $16,561 from 44 screens and has now grossed $240,744.
Biopic Lee and doco Never Look Away were the only other titles with strong local interest to take over $1,000 over the weekend. Lee has now grossed $1,120,577; Never Look Away has earned $118,465.
The three other local titles on release were:
On 3 screens, Taki Rua Theatre – Breaking Barriers, which has now grossed $3,532; Gut Instinct, on 2 screens with a gross of $2,883; and Maurice & I, also on 2 screens, which has grossed $350,670.
No major releases arrive in cinemas here this week, so the placings at the top of next weekend’s chart (the first of 2025) are likely to look much the same as this weekend’s chart, the final one of 2024.
