Nobody will be surprised that Deadpool & Wolverine opened in the top spot, given its impressive numbers elsewhere. On 113 screens here, it took $2,334,416 for $2,693,150 including previews. The film’s take over the weekend was more than double the take of every other film on release combined – not bad going for an R16 title.
At #2, Inside Out 2 played 111 screens, adding $248,945 to total $8,252,039.
Twisters held on to third place, taking A$165,756 from 94 screens, and now has a gross of $1,258,899.
Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End was the only NZ film playing over the weekend. It added $21,542 from 57 screens to extend its total take to $797,406 – and has probably passed $800K by the time you’re reading this.
With the NZIFF beginning opening this week, it’s unlikely we’ll see much in the way of new NZ activity in the box office reports for the few weeks, other than Ant Timpson’s Bookworm, which is opening next week.
For legs, it’s very hard to beat Brit dramedy Wicked Little Letters. Now in its 19th week, it’s taken $1,742,099.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine’s arrival, this week is light on big budget films opening, with M. Night Shayamalan’s Trap the closest to thing to a major studio title. Quite a few foreign language titles also make their debut appearances.
As always, huge thanks to Numero for the data that powers our box office reports.
