NZ Box Office Report: 26 October 2025

A wholly new top three was the result of counting up the Labour Day weekend’s box office returns, with all the current podium places going to films opening their runs.

Regretting You took the top spot, playing on 92 screens and earning $213,846 on its way to a gross of $294,014 including previews.

At #2, biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere played 98 screens and took $198,028, for $221,273 including previews.

Coming in third, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc played 53 screens. It took $132,576 for a gross including previews of $172,825.

The previous weekend’s chart-topping Tron: Ares landed at #4, pushing its gross take out to $662,147.

Prime Minister played 68 screens and added $48,797 for $896,006. This appears to contradict a media release put out early on Tuesday that the film had passed a $1 million take. Having taken less than $50K over the four days (Thu-Sun) weekend report covers, it seems unlikely the film would have then taken more than $100K – even on a holiday Monday. The $1 million+ claim may include festival screenings, which box office reporting often doesn’t.

A bunch of local titles played over the weekend, including 2019 doco Hillary: Ocean To Sky (which took $1,214), Grace: A Prayer for Peace ($718, for a total $40,039), Devils on Horses ($369 for $1,332); and James & Isey ($188 for $597,394).

Workmates played 4 screens, adding $524 for $26,376, while Went Up The Hill played on 3 screens, adding $36 for $5,627.

Last year’s biggest non-studio earner in NZ, Wicked Little Letters, popped up to take $105 and extend its gross to $1,747,357.

This week’s openers, just in time for Hallowe’en, include Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia – having its premiere here in Terror-Fi, and the official opening of Pike River, which has been busy doing Q+A preview screenings.
