As the school holidays run down, so does the stranglehold fam-friendly titles have held on the box office chart in recent weeks.
Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has opened in the top spot, playing on 107 screens and taking $338,969 on its first weekend. Its gross, including previews, is $430,684.
Paddington in Peru placed second, adding $229,225 from 113 screens, for a total take so far of $2,252,089.
At #3 is another new arrival, romance We Live in Time, which took $218,343 from 99 screens for a total including previews of $368,011.
Moana 2 continued on 87 screens, adding $147,569 over the weekend to lift its total to $9,928,406. A decent end to the school holidays should see it pass $10 million by this time next week.
A good number of titles in the running for gongs during awards season also feature on the chart, but without having any significant effects on the overall picture.
Films with local links playing over the weekend included NZ-shot Wolf Man, which took $25,756 for a total of $129,802; Better Man, which added $15,296 for $541,203; Lee, which earned $1,040 to gross $1,137,017; and I Am the River, The River is Me, which took $234.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim earned $223 to gross $261,221; Maurice & I took $222 for $351,289; and Never Look Away added $54 for $123,881.
