Two new arrivals took the top two spots on the weekend chart, with Lilo & Stitch proving considerably more popular than the closing film in the Mission Impossible franchise.
The live-action Lilo and Stitch opened on 104 screens, and took $1,373,564.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning opened on 120 screens, taking $914,175 over the weekend, for a total including previews of $2,053,767.
The previous weekend’s #1, Final Destination Bloodlines, dropped to #3, adding $204,039 for a gross take to date of $783,001.
At #8, Tinā played 73 screens, and added $34,682. Its total take is now $6,268,366.
At #9, A Minecraft Movie took $31,575 for a gross of $9,919,317.
Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds took $9,835 to lift its total to $189,094.
Indie The People We Love added $2,447 from 9 screens, and has now earned $31,766; fellow indie Forgive Us All took $128 from 7 screens, and has a total of $15,139.
A pair of older docos returned, with Jess Feast’s Gardening With Soul taking $630 and Sarah Groenhert’s Ever The Land taking $519.
This week’s new arrivals include the Philippou Brothers’ Bring Her Back, with Sally Hawkins, which has been picking up good reviews elsewhere; and Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, with a star-studded cast.
