Nobody will be surprised that Wicked ended its opening weekend on top of the chart. The film took $1,144,052 from 117 screens, its gross just passing $1.5 million including previews.
Gladiator II, on 121 screens, added $546,194 for a total take of $1,864,175 as it stepped down to #2. The previous weekend’s #2, Red One, also stepped down one place and added $143,769 for a total of $810,212.
Lucy Lawless’ Never Look Away held steady at #11, adding $11,695 from 32 screens to lift its gross to $89,885.
The remainder of the NZ titles all appeared in the lower half of the chart, and all played on more than a single screen over the weekend.
Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End’s total is now $891,349; Bookworm’s is $466,597.
Maurice & I has $349,373; Encanto Reo Maori has $228,149; and A Mistake $113,728.
Head South’s gross is $18,381; Sharko’s $16,834.
Arriving this week are A24’s Terror-Fi opener Heretic, Disney’s Moana 2 and Moana 2 – Te Reo Maori, and Whetū Fala’s NZIFF-premiered doco Taki Rua Theatre – Breaking Barriers, which is almost the last of the local titles making their way into cinemas this year.
