Despicable Me 4 opened in top spot, restoring the million dollar plus opening weekend exhibitors love – and need – these days. On 110 screens, the film took $1,406,626 – over six times the amount its closest rival took.
The previous weekend’s #1, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, dropped into second place. It took $232,469 off 96 screens, lifting its gross to $1,181,404.
Still at #3, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes played a more modest 69 screens, adding $77,957 for a total take of $2,915,542.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga continued to disappoint, taking $59,726 from 87 screens, which was enough to push it past the $1.5 million mark.
Of the locals, Joika took $3,240 from 26 screens, for a total of $140,939.
The Mountain returned on a couple of screens, taking a modest $1,992 and retaining its spot as the year’s leader of the local pack, having earned $734,453.
The Moon is Upside Down played 5 screens for $814 and a total take of $124,127.
This week, Kiwis will get to see Mike Jonathan’s Ka Whawhai Tonu, opening to coincide with Friday’s Matariki holiday, and Inside Out 2, which arrives here a couple of weeks later than in a lot of markets.
