Holding steady in the top spot over the weekend was Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which added $327,187 from 97 screens, to lift its total to $857,497, making it the only big recent studio release to complete two weekends without banking a million dollars.
Also holding steady, at #2, was The Garfield Movie, on 105 screens. It added $161,414 to extend its take to $1,234,849.
The only change to the podium positions was the previous weekend’s #3 and #4 switching places. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes climbed back to #3, adding $111,117 from 85 screens for a total $2,807,067; Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga fell to #4, taking $95,494 from 104 screens for a gross of $1,418,605.
Ishana Night Shyamalan’s The Watchers (above) was the best-placed of the new arrivals, ending the weekend at #5 with $71,770.
Of the local titles, The Mountain has gone – but is currently playing across the ditch in the Sydney Film Festival.
Joika took $5,442 from 28 screens, for a gross of $134,810.
The Moon is Upside Down added $2,219 from 18 screens, for a total of $122,413.
Down to 3 screens as it heads towards the exit, The Convert added 670 to lift its total to $572,941.
Popping up for a single screen outing, Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit added $235 for an overall take of $5,470,302.
The biggest of the titles opening this week is the first Despicable Me movie in seven years, bringing more Gru and Minions for the latest outing in what’s become the world’s biggest animated franchise.
