NZ Box Office report: 12 January 2025

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continued its run at the top of the chart, taking $311,906 over the weekend to grow its total take to $2,738,264.

Last week’s second- and third-placed titles swapped places over the weekend, with Mufasa: The Lion King climbing to #2 with earnings of $296,530 and a total of $3,229,078.

Down one at #3, Paddington in Peru took $295,894 for a gross of $1,376,476.

Also down one place, from #4 to #5, Moana 2 held pretty strong, taking $203,756. It now has a gross take of $9,374,970, comfortably keeping its spot as the highest-earning title currently on release.

At #9, the Wētā-infused Robbie Williams biopic Better Man earned $59,947 for $452,013.

It’s a long drop until the next title with strong NZ involvement. At #30, Lee added $2,314 to lift its total to $1,132,647.

One place below Lee, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim added $2,203 for $259,381.

Taki Rua Theatre – Breaking Barriers took $292, for a total of $3,838. Gut Instinct took $36 for $2,919. On a single screen, Never Look Away took $15 for a total of $121,626.

New arrivals opening this week include Leigh Whannell’s Wolfman, shot in Wellington, along with Golden Globe winner Emilia Perez.
