Moana 2 opened in top spot, playing 125 screens and taking $3,134,582. The film released in English and te reo versions, although it’s unclear if the figures are for both versions combined. It’s usual for te reo versions to be identified separately, but there’s no separate reporting of a te reo version.
Moana 2’s arrival pushed the previous weekend’s top two titles down one spot. Now at #2, Wicked played 119 screens, adding $842,209 for a total take of $2,599,138. At #3, Gladiator II played 116 screens over the weekend, taking $301,039 to take its total to $2,332,051.
At #7, Lee played 55 screens, earning $26,891 for a gross of $1,049,813.
Four NZ docos played over the weekend.
On 25 screens, Never Look Away took $5,498 to total $102,844. New arrival Taki Rua Theatre – Breaking Barriers played 7 screens, taking $702. Sharko played 3 screens, earning $370 for $17,509. Maurice & I played 5 screens, added $62 for a total of $349,664.
Five other local titles also played, none of them on a single screen.
Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End added $980 to push its gross to $892,839. Head South took $487 for $19,318. Encanto Reo Maori earned $167 to total $229,069.
Bookworm added $88 for $468,324. A Mistake added $56 for $114,020.
Although a huge 15 titles are opening this week, none is a major studio title. Doug Dillaman’s trippy post-apocalyptic sci-fi Gut Instinct is the new local title on the block.
As always, huge thanks to Numero for the data that powers our box office reports.
