Music videos good training ground for filmmakers

Filmmaker Jonathan King was the director/writer and judge/mentor for the recent REELS Independent Music Video Awards.

OPINION: My first job in film was painting grime with a brush directly onto strips of 35mm film, to be superimposed as an organic ‘vignette’ to the edges of the frame on a handful of shots in Crowded House’s Private Universe music video.

I went on to direct more than 100 music videos myself – and that became my film school: I have had no formal training in the field – before moving onto directing feature films such as Black Sheep and Under the Mountain. And I have, in turn, been able to give other filmmakers opportunities on my music videos: Gwen Isaac, director of last year’s documentary feature hit Ms Information, got her start working as a production assistant on music videos for me.
