Following its acclaimed premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival and the New Zealand Film Festival, the documentary is set for a cinematic release over Waitangi weekend in 2025. Directed by Kent Belcher and produced by Nigel McCulloch, the film offers a raw, behind-the-scenes look at Alien Weaponry, the chart-topping thrash metal band known for their unique use of Te Reo Māori in their music.
Alien Weaponry burst onto the music scene with their 2017 debut album, Tū, winning the Maioha Award at the APRA Silver Scrolls and the Best Rock Artist title at the Aotearoa Music Awards. Their success continued with their second album, Tangaroa, which earned them another Best Rock Artist award in 2022.
ALIEN WEAPONRY: KUA TUPU TE ARA captures the band’s journey over six years, spotlighting the two brothers at its heart. The film follows them through the release of Tū and their international tours across Australasia, Europe, and America, showcasing the challenges of constant touring, growing up, and the impact on their family. With exclusive backstage access, the documentary immerses viewers in the band’s most intimate moments, presenting not just a rising musical phenomenon but also a Kiwi family navigating extraordinary experiences.
