Former Goldman Sachs NZ Head Andrew Barclay Appointed TVNZ Chair

The Government has appointed former Goldman Sachs New Zealand chief Andrew Barclay as the new chair of public broadcaster TVNZ.

Barclay spent more than 25 years at Goldman Sachs, joining in 1999 and rising to managing director in 2006. He announced his departure from the firm in May.

Media and Communications Minister Paul Goldsmith said Barclay’s finance expertise would strengthen the broadcaster’s leadership.

“Andrew brings extensive experience in financial management and governance. These are the skills needed to provide strong oversight of performance and strategic decision-making, which are critical for a commercially focused public broadcaster like TVNZ,” Goldsmith said.

Barclay will formally join the board on 3 November, succeeding Alastair Carruthers, who retires a day earlier.

Carruthers’ exit has surprised many in the sector, coming less than halfway through his three-year term. He was appointed chair in July 2023 after previously leading the New Zealand Film Commission
