Box Office report: 7 April 2024

On 96 screens, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire kept its grip on the top spot, adding close to another half million over the weekend, and lifting its gross to $2,192,856.

New arrival Kung Fu Panda 4 played on 105 screens, taking $397,327 to add to some serious preview action for a total of $1,223,320.

Dune: Part Two, still playing 89 screens, added $189,432 to place third with a gross take of $5,877,245 and continue as the highest-earner currently on release.

Rachel House’s The Mountain dropped one spot to #7, adding $68,653 for a total $294,597. Producers will hope the school holidays, which begin on Friday, help keep the film alive long enough to pick up more income, as programmers’ generosity in playing the film on 103 screens last weekend (more than any other film except Kung Fu Panda 4) wasn’t well rewarded.

Lee Tamahori’s The Convert dropped out of the top ten, to #11, adding $34,322 to close in on half a million and end the weekend with $489,509.

Annie Goldson’s Red Mole: A Romance took $240 from a single screen, and has now grossed $10,621.

Gwen Isaac’s Ms. Information returned, taking $915 for a total $84,096.

In the chart’s lower depths, further confirmation that eight lower limbs doesn’t give a film legs, as Marvel’s least successful superhero outing Madame Web limped on on a single screen to take $59 over the weekend. Perhaps more surprisingly, Joel Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls took $35 off four screens, which suggests both that at least one of those screenings was unattended and that the marketing has failed to excite the film’s primary target audience, as it’s grossed less than $50,000.

Opening this week include Alex Garland’s action drama, Civil War, and another animated competitor for the school holiday spend, The Tiger’s Apprentice.
