2023 ended on a Sunday, the final weekend chart neatly closing off the box office numbers for the year. In a couple of weeks, we’ll take a look at the performance of NZ titles at the box office across the whole of last year, but this week’s report is for the final weekend of 2023.
Top of the pops on the year’s final chart was Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which recovered from a poor opening weekend to climb from 8th to #1. Over the weekend it played on 105 screens, taking $918,265 to total $1,666,928.
The Christmas weekend’s #1, Wonka, dropped into second place, taking $855,519 from 120 screens to grow its gross to $3,624,733.
At #3, Anthony Hopkins’ turn as Nicholas Winton in One Life, took $303,020 from 94 screens, for a total of $586,987.
Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins continued on 104 screens, taking $129,159 to end the year in seventh spot. Its total take is now $1,108,723.
Three local titles played on a single screen. Gwen Isaac’s Ms. Information took $304 to lift its total to $81,013. Tom Sainsbury’s Loop Track added $256 to total $72,576. Alice Englert’s Bad Behaviour took $32 to total $57,741.
