Box Office report: 26 May 2024

After a successful premiere in Cannes, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opened here last week, and in 74 other territories. Here in NZ, it played 107 screens and took $521,933 to top the weekend chart.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped to second, taking $296,224 from 112 screens, to lift its total to $2,012,992.

IF also dropped one place, ending the weekend in third place, adding $205,626 from 100 screens to take its gross to $627,604.

Two more films had their opening weekends in NZ, both taking a little over $30,000, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (#7) and Turbo (#8).

On its second weekend, James Napier Robertson’s Joika dropped one place, to #11. On 42 screens, it added $26,050 for a total $75,252.

On 31 screens, Loren Taylor’s The Moon is Upside Down added $8,048 for a total of $106,391.

Rachel House’s The Mountain took $2,502 for a gross of $726,627; and Lee Tamahori’s The Convert added $1,776 for $570,980.

Annie Goldson’s Red Mole: A Romance had a single-screen outing, taking $390 for $11,073.

This week, a number of titles open with The Garfield Movie expected to be the biggest of the bunch.
