Box Office report: 23 July 2023

There were no surprises after the weekend which two films took the top spots, and no surprise over which of those two ran out the winner.

Barbie opened on 116 screens, taking $3,511,506 to gross $3,854,469 including previews. Caiming the top spot, it earned 2.5 times as much as its closest rival.

Oppenheimer played 113 screens, earning $1,405,717 to take the second spot.

The previous weekend’s #1, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, dropped to third spot Despite playing a whopping 158 screens. It added $504,052 to gross $3,154,208 – which means that Barbie’s opening weekend has already overtaken MI7.

It’s a week of slim pickings for local titles, at least outside of the NZIFF (which, like most festivals, doesn’t report earnings, so titles don’t appear on the charts).

At #9 Coco Reo Maori played 30 screens, adding $44,000 for a total of $158,464.

The Tank played a single screen, taking $122 to gross $20,656.
