The podium placings over the weekend followed a pattern that’s become familiar of late – a new arrival debuted in the top spot, pushing the previous weekend’s #1 and #2 down to second and third.
This weekend it was The Garfield Movie taking the bragging rights, playing 109 screens for takings of $442,263 and a gross take, including previews, of $616,215.
On 107 screens and ending the weekend at #2, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga added $351,877 for a total of $1,005,376.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped to #3, playing on 111 screens, and adding $307,854 to lift its total to $2,480,492.
Dropping 9 spots to #17, James Napier Robertson’s Joika took $15,110 and has now grossed $103,512.
Dropping 6 to #23, Loren Taylor’s The Moon is Upside Down took $4,733 for a total of $113,611.
At #33, Rachel House’s The Mountain added $990 for $729,166, while at #41 Lee Tamahori’s The Convert added $549 to gross $571,804.
For their combined take of around $1.5 million, those four films have been in cinemas for a combined 30 weeks – so, as we near the halfway point of 2024, it’s not been a stellar year for local titles as yet. It doesn’t look great when compared with British comedy Wicked Little Letters, which has been in cinemas here for 11 weeks and taken $1.7 million, more than the four local releases combined, and more than any single NZ title since 2016, when Hunt for the Wilderpeople ($12.21 million) and Chasing Great ($1.83 million) both did better.
This week’s new releases include Bad Boys: Ride or Die and, if you like your entertainment with skis, Warren Miller’s All Time Adventure Entertainment – a seven-decade retrospective of winter sports on screen.
As always, huge thanks to Numero for the data that powers our box office reports.
