Box Office report: 21 April 2024

The school holidays buoyed Kung Fu Panda 4, which remained on top of an unchanged top three over the weekend. On 112 screens, Panda took $722,582 for a total of $2,895,676.

At #2, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire added $384,536 for $3,227,298 while, at #3, Civil War took $160,706 for $455,579.

Heavily-hyped tennis triangle tale Challengers (above) opened on 95 screens at #4, one of three new arrivals in the top ten. It took $140,369 to total $162,094 including previews. Other new arrivals in the top ten were Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett’s horror Abigail and Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Indian comedy Varshangalkku Shesham.

Rachel House’s The Mountain remained at #8, and has perked up considerably during the school holidays. Over the weekend it added $86,026 and has now grossed $553,151.

Now at #19, The Convert was down to 32 screens, its $14,675 take lifting its gross to $546,461.

Having a rare outing, ahead of Anzac Day, Peter Jackson’s 2018 doco They Shall Not Grow Old played a single screen, its $338 take enough to lift its gross past $820,000.

Opening this week are Aussie director Jordan Prince-Wright’s World War 1 drama Before Dawn, and Helena Coan’s NZ-set doco The Lie, about the murder of tourist Grace Millane.
