To nobody’s surprise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ended its opening weekend in the #1 spot, taking $786,415 from 106 screens, and reminding everyone of how good Wētā is, just as the news broke of more Lord of the Rings titles to come.
Playing on 113 screens, last week’s chart-topper The Fall Guy dropped to #2, adding $213,654 to take its total to $1,438,500.
Back to Black also dropped one spot, to #3, taking $115,544 from 105 screens to lift its gross to $384,028.
Over the weekend, the top three titles took over 71% of all box office earnings.
Loren Taylor’s The Moon is Upside Down climbed three spots on its second weekend out, playing 43 screens to close the weekend at #10. It added $22,916 for a total of $70,702 – earnings almost certainly not helped by Simon Morris’ RNZ review.
Rachel House’s The Mountain continued, playing 39 screens, and adding $11,325 over the weekend for a gross of $712,018, while Lee Tamahori’s The Convert played 11 screens and took $1,187 to total $566,986.
This week sees the local release of James Napier Robertson’s ballet biopic, Joika (released as The American in some territories), which has been on a festival run elsewhere since September.
As always, huge thanks to Numero for the data that powers our box office reports.
