Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins won on its opening weekend, scoring $297,721 from 199 screens to gross $384,801 including previews.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes dropped to #2, and is still playing on 109 screens. It added $268,254 to lift its gross to $3,164,667.
Hayao Miyazkai’s The Boy and the Heron opened at #3, taking $211,655 from 57 screens.
The remainder of the local titles screening over the weekend were very much mopping up at the end of their runs, with only two playing more than single screen.
Uproar played 13 screens, adding $1,593 to gross $793,858. Loop Track played on 4 screens, and has earned a total $71,867.
Ms. Information and Bad Behaviour each played a single screen. Gwen Isaac’s doco portrait of Dr Souxsie Wiles has now grossed $80,161, while Alice Englert’s comedy has $57,415.
Returning to cinemas for single screening outings were Avatar: The Way of Water, which has now grossed $19,940,366 and 2022’s local best earner, Muru, which now has $1,520,729.
