Box Office report: 3 September 2023

The third outing for the Denzel Washington-starring Equalizer ended its first weekend in first place. Playing on a relatively small 86 screens, the film took $382,367 to gross $406,858 including previews.

The previous weekend’s top three all fell one spot. Now at #2, Sound of Freedom played 104 screens, adding $260,682 for $905,655.

At #3, Barbie – now Warner Brothers’ highest box office earner – continued on 109 screens, adding $230,029 to lift its total to $13,719,363.

With The Nun 2, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 and the heavily-promoted Theater Camp all opening this week, Barbie’s likely to relinquish its podium position after the coming weekend – a fate which has already happened to Oppenheimer, now at #4.

Three new arrivals opened in the top 10 over the weekend. At #5, Ao Shen’s Chinese crime thriller No More Bets easily won the per screen takings award, raking over $11,500 per screen to end the weekend with $128,497 off 11 screens. Haunted Mansion and Past Lives also debuted.

Coco Reo Maori played a couple of screens, adding $4,018 to lift its total to $246,393. The Doc Edge-premiered Pacific Mother played 4 screens, taking $1,657 to lift its post-festival total to $2,439. On a single screen, Red, White & Brass took $162 to extend its gross to $1,463,740.
