The old is new again as the 20 year journey to The Devil Wears Prada 2 comes to an end. Opening on 124 screens, the sequel took $1,394,169 for $1,660,151 including previews.
Last weekend’s #1 dropped to #2. Michael added $803,125 from 112 screens to push past $2.5 million.
At #3, Project Hail Mary continued on 91 screens, adding $144,178 for $5,646,884.
Three NZ films opened on Thursday, with Sgt. Haane leading the way. On 89 screens, it ended the weekend at #5, with $78,783.
At a surprisingly high #10, The Time Travellers Guide to Hamilton Gardens played 25 screens, taking $27,610.
And at #15, The Weed Eaters – which has done a substantial amount of Q+A previews over the last 3 weeks – played 31 screens and took $12,810.
Tenor: My Name is Pati played 45 screens and placed at #16, adding $12,200 for a total take of $1,064,110.
At #19, Holy Days played 18, adding $1,676 to lift its gross to $580,037.
On 7 screens, Fackham Hall, starring Thomasin McKenzie, added $951 to push its total to $696,352.
Marama played a single screen, taking $288 for a total of $205,864.
The Deb continues to go about as well as Rebel Wilson’s court case, adding $263 from 25 screens, for a very disappointing gross of $21,153.
The 10th anniversary screenings of Hunt for the Wilderpeople took $140 from 103 screens, for $106,721.
Waikato indie The Tavern came out of retirement for a single screen outing, taking $50 for $30,761.
Openers this week include Hit Me Hard & Soft from James Cameron and Billie Eilish, in 3D at selected cinemas, and Kyle Balda’s The Sheep Detectives, with a cast including Emma Thompson, Hong Chau and Hugh Jackman.
