NZ Box Office Report: 22 March 2026

Two new arrivals took the top spots over the weekend, led by Ryan Gosling in space in Project Hail Mary on 115 screens, which took $791,526 for $944,219 after some impressive preview numbers.

Opening at #2 was Aditya Dhar’s 230-minute (yep!) action title Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Off 44 screens, it took $539,693, with a per screen average almost double that of anything else in NZ cinemas over the weekend.

Last weekend’s #1 Reminders of Him dropped to #3. On 86 screens, it took $125,537 for $442,282.

Also on 86 screens, Rebecca Tansley’s doco Tenor: My Name is Pati continued a strong run, ending the weekend at #4 with another $103,190 for $496,186 and has probably passed the half million mark before you read this.

Nat Boltt’s Holy Days placed at #9, adding $32,206 from 83 screens for $456,050.

At #12, Thomasin McKenzie-starring Fackham Hall continued on 41 screens, taking $19,779 to push its gross to $630,110.

New local arrival, Lisa Burd’s Taranaki-shot doco No Tears on the Field played on 50 screens, taking $9,851 for a gross including previews of $32,227.

Almost done in cinemas now, Avatar: Fire and Ash played 3 screens, taking $1,994 for a gross of $11,510,971.

Taratoa Stappard’s Mārama took $1,160 from 7 screens, and will pass $200K this week, having ended the weekend with $199,701.

On 2 screens, Not Only Fred Dagg earned $84, for 460,875.

On a single screen, Anchor Me: The Don McGlashan Story added $27, for a gross of $149,493.

Openers this week include Kirk Jones’ Toronto-premiered Tourette-themed drama I Swear with Robert Aramayo (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) and Peter Mullan (Trainspotting, Top of the Lake, After the Party); and Kirill Sokolov’s They Will Kill You, with a cast including Harry Potter’s Tom Felton and Industry’s Myha’la.
