NZ Box Office Report: 31 August 2025

Who saw André Rieu’s 2025 Maastricht Concert: Waltz the Night Away! opening in the top spot? Not Andrea Bocelli, we’d guess, but it did. Playing on 78 screens, it took $227,798.

Now at #2, The Naked Gun took $175,387 from 102 screens, comfortably passing half a million to close the weekend with a total take of $555,632.

Weapons dropped into the #3 spot, playing on 75 screens, and adding $123,829 for a cumulative $1,208,917.

At #4, celebrating 50 years of giving sharks a bad name, the anniversary outing of Jaws took $96,028 from 66 screens.

Curtis Vowell’s Workmates played 29 screens for earnings of $5,050 and a total take (excluding festival appearances) of $18,978.

Having passed six months in cinemas last week, Tinā added a modest $195 from 4 screens. It’s now amassed $6,483,627 and (following the departure of A Minecraft Movie) is now the highest-earning first-run title currently in NZ cinemas.

Doco The House Within, played 8 screens, taking $657, and now has a gross of $46,138.

On 2 screens over the weekend, Kōkā added $40 for a $240,676 total take.

New arrivals this week will include Margaret Gordon’s local doco Life in One Chord, the story of Shayne Carter, and Disney’s R16 title The Roses, a reimagining of 1980s title War of the Roses, pitting Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman against one another in the roles originally played by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
