Marvel’s Thunderbolts* opened here at #1, as it did in several other territories, playing 93 NZ screens and taking $748,788 for a total to date of $842,615 including previews.
On 71 screens, Sinners held steady at #2, adding $257,471 to pass $1 million and finish the weekend with $1,051,544.
At #3, A Minecraft Movie might run out of steam before catching Moana 2’s year’s best take of $10.2 million. Minecraft added $240,931 over the weekend to reach $9,572,023.
We’re a little confused by the numbers reported for Tinā this week. Over the weekend, it added $107,010 from 91 screens, but its reported total now ($5,741,289) is lower than last week’s reported total of $5,754,737. Across the ditch, Tinā followed a successful run of previews by taking over half a million Aussie dollars from 183 screens on its official opening weekend, to place at #5 (the same position it currently occupies here) and gross over AU$1.25 million.
Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds opened on 68 screens and ended its first weekend with earnings of $54,224, and a total of $77,082 including previews. See our interview with director Ursula Grace WIlliams (no relation) here.
Another local title having its first weekend was indie drama The People We Love, which played 22 screens. It took $8,205 for a total so far of $10,130. See our interview with Mike Smith and Sharon Tyrell here.
Almost a decade old now, Sarah Grohnert’s Ever The Land played a couple of screens, taking $537 for a total of $43,386.
Alien Weaponry: Kua Tupu Te Ara played a single screen over the weekend, adding $131 to lift its gross to $6,038
Moana 2 and recent releases Project Fiftyone and The Rule of Jenny Pen have all left cinemas, for now at least.
Titles opening this week include Jordana Scott’s local indie film, South Island-shot post-apocalypse western, Forgive Us All.
As always, our thanks go to Numero for providing the data that powers our box office reporting.
