Deadpool & Wolverine remained top of the pops over the weekend, although – for the first time in its run – a new arrival came close to matching its take. On 116 screens, Deadpool & Wolverine added $891,369 for a total of $6,202,078.
It Ends With Us played 104 screens, taking $831,019 for a gross including previews of $1,073,128.
Inside Out 2, last week’s #2, slipped to #3, adding $118,412 to lift its total to $8,620,072 and remain the year’s best performer at the NZ box office.
Ant Timpson’s Bookworm (above) opened at #5 on 105 screens. It took $102,679, which isn’t a great performance, but it was competing with the NZIFF in both Auckland and Wellington. Hopefully comments in the media about its potential to be “the next Wilderpeople” won’t prove to be a kiss of death.
On 22 screens, Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End added $5,896 to lift its gross to $851,489.
2023’s best local performer, Red, White & Brass, turned up for a single screen outing, taking $1,755 and extending its total take to $1,467,220.
This week’s openers include Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, Kelly O’Sullivan & Alex Thompson’s smart American indie, Ghostlight, and – if you’re in Christchurch, Dunedin or Hamilton – the NZIFF.
As always, huge thanks to Numero for the data that powers our box office reports.
