Hugh Macdonald was not a household name but, in terms of documenting our history and how Kiwis see themselves, he was a major influence.

Macdonald died in May, aged 80, leaving an impressive catalogue of work. Although he spent more than 60 years directing and making films, it was a film he made aged 30 that he is probably best known for.
