The first weekend chart of the second half of the year looked exactly like the last weekend chart of the first half of the year, at least as far as the podium positions were concerned.
Inside Out 2, on 113 screens, remained top, adding $939,524 to gross $4,061,038.
On 119 screens, Despicable Me 4 continued in second place, adding $403,006 for a total of $2,893,934.
Again at #3, A Quiet Place: Day One (above) played 94 screens, taking $302,864 to lift its total to $998,685.
Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End also held steady, remaining at #4 and taking $152,681 from 103 screens. Its total of $516,018 has it looking good to overtake Lee Tamahori’s The Convert ($573,000) by the time the school holidays are done.
Long-running Brit dramedy Wicked Little Letters played its 16th week, its take of $1,441 over the weekend totalling more than the combined earnings of the three remaining NZ titles in cinemas – Joika, which added $437 for $146,475; Muru, which took $130; and The Moon is Upside Down, which took $95 for $125,303.
School’s out for summer, in the northern hemisphere, and for the halfway point of the year here. There’s no new family-friendly fare opening this week – but Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum-starring romantic drama Fly Me to the Moon lifts off on Thursday, along with a pair of R16 titles: Kinds of Kindness (“pure sicko Yorgos Lanthimos” according to Vulture) and MaXXXine, the closer for Ti West’s horror trilogy, which had some previews over the weekend.
As always, huge thanks to Numero for the data that powers our box office reports.
