Greenstone TV, a stalwart in New Zealand’s television production industry, reached a significant milestone in 2024 as it celebrated its 30th anniversary with a dazzling event in central Auckland last month.
The occasion brought together a diverse array of past and present staff, along with friends, channel partners, and collaborators, for a night filled with nostalgia. Guests were treated to exclusive screenings of interviews and highlights from the company’s extensive catalogue, meticulously curated into two tailor-made showreels.
Established in 1994 by former journalist John Harris, Greenstone TV has evolved into one of Australasia’s most prominent independent production companies. Renowned for its observational documentaries, factual entertainment, scripted dramas, and children’s programming, the company has produced over 2500 hours of original content in its three-decade journey, captivating audiences both locally and across more than 100 territories worldwide.
CEO Rachel Antony attributes Greenstone’s enduring success to its curious, creative, and dedicated team, as well as to the innate appeal of showcasing New Zealand stories on screen. She emphasizes the company’s commitment to portraying diverse narratives that resonate with Kiwi audiences.
Reflecting on its illustrious history, Greenstone has been at the forefront of observational documentaries, pioneering immersive storytelling experiences with groundbreaking series like “The Zoo” and “Motorway Patrol.” The company continues to produce iconic shows such as “Border Patrol,” “Highway Cops,” “Dog Squad,” and “Renters,” always mindful of the privilege and responsibility of sharing people’s stories.
Tash Christie, Head of Factual, underscores the importance of sparking meaningful conversations through their content, balancing substance with entertainment to engage viewers effectively.
In recent years, Greenstone has expanded its repertoire to include scripted dramas and comedies, with successful projects like “My Life Is Murder” and “Kid Sister.” Exciting new ventures are on the horizon, including the eagerly anticipated drama “Happiness,” promising a delightful blend of Kiwi charm and theatrical flair.
As Greenstone TV looks ahead to the future, it remains dedicated to crafting dynamic series and documentaries that celebrate the richness and diversity of New Zealand’s storytelling landscape.
