Im really amused to read SPADA assumptions, presented as facts .
I dont remember the NZFC having played a part in ‘nurturing or developing’ Jane Campion’s fabulous career.
I believe Jane went to AFTRS, Australian Film, Television+ Radio School in 1981, graduating in 1984.
Her 1st short film ‘Peel’, which won a Cannes Short film Palme D’or in 1982 was Australian, as was her 1st feature film ‘Sweetie’, (1989).
Similarly Roger Donaldson’s 1st feature ‘Sleeping Dogs’ was created, developed, produced by Roger + Larry Parr, and released prior to the establishment of the NZFC.
Im really intrigued by the assertion that ‘one production company estimates the impact to their business’ to be the loss of ‘5200 weeks’ of activity, – 100 Years of Television !
Cmon SPADA, try and stick with reality !
And the suggestion that Offshore created ( and owned) Formats should be eligible for the 40% SPR, displays a complete failure to read the room, and the policies of the current Govt.
Does anyone seriously believe that adapting an existing Format advances NZ creativity or , more importantly, economic success for NZ.
The Format, and its revenue, are the property of an Offshore company. How has that helped grow an NZ Industry? Where is the creative growth for Writers and Actors?
I very much doubt that the bulk of SPADA members agreed to this proposal.
SPADA did not seek input from its membership in creating this document, so my guess is that an idea as shallow as this has come from no more than 2-3 members who hold sway over the President.

As the Shownews article states ‘The Industry Deserves Better !’
