SUMMARY:Script Editing for Producers
DESCRIPTION:Producers know how to make films. They are brilliant at finance plans\, budgeting\, location scouting\, relationships with agents\, distributors\, sales agents\, streamers\, broadcasters and audiences. And they know a good story when they see one – but all too often they see scripts that are promising\, but lacking key screen elements. \nWhat producers are looking for in screenplays is original compelling narratives\, a gripping world of the story with strongly developed characters\, a propulsive story with escalating dramatic conflict and sparkling dialogue. \nOften producers are presented with scripts which have some\, but not all of these essential screen elements – and they are not always as clear as they would like to be about how to turn things around and implement an effective development strategy. \nThis workshop is designed to enable producers to engage deeply with screen stories using the language of script development and to recognise when a script is working\, when it is not\, and what to do about it. At its conclusion\, producers should feel confident about how to assess the potential of a screenplay\, how to discuss the screenplay with the writer\, how to put together the right development strategy\, how to constantly consider ways in which the writer could make stronger choices and how to assess and elevate each draft. \nUnderstanding development and the process by which a good screenplay becomes great is an essential part of every producers’ toolkit because a producer who understands development will always be ahead of the curve. \nThis workshop will run as two separate modules. \nThe first is for experienced producers (minimum of one producer credit\, either feature film or TV series) looking for a refresher course or upskilling or just the opportunity to talk about how screenplays work how producers manage script development. Course runs Friday 21 June – Monday 24 June. Apply here. \nThe second is for emerging producers (no prior credits required) who are keen to further their script analysis and script development skills. Course runs Tuesday 25 June – Thursday 27 June. Apply here.

SUMMARY:Doc Edge Clinic: Local Lens\, Global Reach: The Power of Place in Filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:Join U.S. director Thaddeus D. Matula (“Into the Spotlight”) in “Local Lens\, Global Reach: The Power of Place in Filmmaking” as he unravels the art of storytelling and the architecture of narrative structure. Discover how compelling stories thrive on the foundations of “but\,” “therefore\,” and “meanwhile.” Thaddeus\, a storytelling vessel\, compares his approach to carving out the transcendent truth hidden within reality\, much like Michelangelo’s pursuit to free the angel from marble. \nThis talk isn’t just about filmmaking; it’s about the universal language of passion that resonates with all. Thaddeus will share insights on connecting with subjects’ passions\, staying open to opportunities\, and nurturing connections to illuminate the human experience through cinema. \nFor filmmakers in Christchurch and beyond\, “Local Lens\, Global Reach” is a beacon of inspiration\, reminding you that the power to touch hearts and change minds through storytelling lies within you\, no matter where you are. Thaddeus’s journey illustrates that with passion as your compass and storytelling as your craft\, you can create films that resonate globally from your very location. \nIn addition to speaker Matula\, full details of the day’s programme will be advertised soon. \nMatula’s film\, “Into the Spotlight\,” takes the spotlight as our December Film of the Month in the Virtual Cinema. But here’s the exciting part: you can watch the film either on the big screen or online. Plus\, you’ll have the chance to meet the director in person in Christchurch and Auckland. \nChristchurch at Lumiere Cinemas on Saturday 2 December at 4.30pm\nAuckland at The Capitol Cinema on Sunday 3 December at 2.30pm
