SUMMARY:ShowNews Academy – NETWORK
DESCRIPTION:Each month ShowNews presents a film at Academy Cinemas picked by a special film industry guest. For April\, writer/producer Steve Barr has chosen NETWORK \nTickets only $10!\nHappy Hour drinks from 7pm.\nScreening 8:15pm. \nIn 1976 two of the key players in the Golden Age of Television\, writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sidney Lumet\, delivered a coruscating attack – at once savage and hilarious – on the medium that made their names. \nSINCE THIS SHOW WAS THE ONLY THING I HAD GOING FOR ME IN MY LIFE\, I’VE DECIDED TO KILL MYSELF. \nTo speak Chayefsky’s Oscar-winning dialogue\, Lumet enlisted a powerhouse cast list\, including Faye Dunaway\, William Holden\, Peter Finch (as ‘the mad prophet of the airwaves’ Howard Beale)\, Robert Duvall\, Ned Beatty and Beatrice Straight. Five of them would be nominated for Academy Awards\, three would win. \nI’M GOING TO BLOW MY BRAINS OUT RIGHT ON THIS PROGRAMME A WEEK FROM TODAY. \nAs well as its four Oscars\, NETWORK was also garlanded with a quartet of Golden Globes\, a BAFTA and numerous other awards. In the years since its release\, its reputation has only grown: the Library of Congress granted it a place on their prestigious National Film Registry; the American Film Institute named it as one of the greatest American films of all time; and the Writers Guild of America declared its screenplay one of the ten best of all time. It remains a true classic.

DESCRIPTION:To kick 2024 off\, Brenda Kendall has chosen the 1954 Fellini classic LA STRADA. \nLA STRADA won the Oscar in 1957 for Best Foreign Language Film. \nFrom Wikipedia. \nLa strada (The Road) is a 1954 Italian drama film directed by Federico Fellini and co-written by Fellini\, Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano. The film tells the story of Gelsomina\, a simple-minded young woman (Giulietta Masina) bought from her mother by Zampanò (Anthony Quinn)\, a brutish strongman who takes her with him on the road. \nFellini described La Strada as “a complete catalogue of my entire mythological world\, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever”.[1] As a result\, the film demanded more time and effort than any of his other works\, before or later.[2] The development process was long and tortuous; there were problems during production\, including insecure financial backing\, problematic casting\, and numerous delays. Finally\, just before the production completed shooting\, Fellini suffered a nervous breakdown that required medical treatment so that he could complete principal photography. Initial critical reaction was harsh\, and the film’s screening at the Venice Film Festival was the occasion of a bitter controversy that escalated into a public brawl between Fellini’s supporters and detractors. \nSubsequently\, however\, La Strada has become “one of the most influential films ever made”\, according to the American Film Institute.[3] It won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1957.[4][5] It was placed fourth in the 1992 British Film Institute directors’ list of cinema’s top 10 films.[6] \nIn 2008\, the film was included on the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage’s 100 Italian films to be saved\, a list of 100 films that “have changed the collective memory of the country between 1942 and 1978.”[7

DESCRIPTION:Watch Out! They Get You While You’re Sleeping! \nWhen health official Elizabeth Driscoll (Brooke Adams) notices that her lover has become strangely distant\, this sets in train a series of shocking discoveries that sees both her and colleague Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) fleeing for their lives to the sound of ear-piercing alien screams. \nRemakes of great films are usually on a hiding to nothing\, but Philip Kaufman’s brilliant update of the 1956 classic is a rare and memorable exception. Transposing the action to the heart of San Francisco allows Kaufman to retain all the suspense of Jack Finney’s original story while adding caustic social commentary about the selfishness of the 1970s ‘me generation’ that remains all too relevant today. \nBut it’s a paranoid thriller first and foremost\, based on one of the most psychologically terrifying of all premises – what happens when you can no longer trust not just the authorities but even your nearest and dearest?

Bruno Ganz is Damiel\, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears\, hopes\, dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist\, he is willing to give up his immortality and come back to earth to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin Wall\, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images\, shot in black and white and color by the legendary Henri Alekan\, forever made the name of director Wim Wenders synonymous with film art.
