SUMMARY:ShowNews Academy - Brewster McCloud
DESCRIPTION:Each month ShowNews presents a film at Academy Cinemas picked by a special film industry guest. For July\, Production Designer Mike Becroft has chosen a hidden gem from legendary American director Robert Altman’s (NASHVILLE\, THE LONG GOODBYE\, McCABE & MRS MILLER) early career: BREWSTER McCLOUD!\nTickets only $10!\nHappy Hour drinks from 7pm.\nScreening 8:30pm.\nDirected by Robert Altman\nStarring Stacy Keach\, Bud Cort\, Sally Kellerman\, René Auberjonois\, Shelley Duvall\, Michael Murphy\nRated R16\n105 minutes | Classic\nBrewster McCloud (Bud Cort) lives deep within the cavernous underground of the Houston Astrodome\, but his dreams rise much higher. He aims to fly. Not in a plane. But with strapped-on wings he’s designing – encouraged by a mysterious woman (Sally Kellerman) who may be his guardian angel. But BREWSTER McCLOUD\, Robert Altman’s wild\, anarchic cult fave\, isn’t about dreams as much as it is about the highs and lows of humanity. It’s a serial-killer mystery. A frenetic car-chase flick. A crazy circus-finale comedy. Shelley Duvall debuts as the tour guide whose seduction of Brewster may lead to his undoing. Ah\, love. The thing that at once shapes and unravels us. The thing that may or may not give us wings

SUMMARY:ShowNews Academy - I Am Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov \nStarring Sergio Corrieri\, Salvador Wood\, José Gallardo\, Jean Bouise\, Luz María Collazo \nEach month ShowNews presents a film at Academy Cinemas picked by a special film industry guest. For June\, it is a 60th anniversary screening of the visually groundbreaking revolutionary triumph\, I AM CUBA! \nBoth a landmark of radical political cinema and one of the most visually ravishing films ever made\, this legendary hymn to revolution shimmers across the screen like a fever dream of rebellion. The result of an extraordinarily ambitious collaboration between the Soviet and Cuban film industries\, director Mikhail Kalatozov’s I AM CUBA unfolds in four explosive vignettes that capture Cuban life on the brink of transformation\, as crushing economic exploitation and inequality give way to a working-class uprising. Backed by Carlos Fariñas’s stirring score\, the dazzling camera work by Sergei Urusevsky—an inspiration for generations of filmmakers to follow—gives flight to the movie’s message of liberation. \nTickets only $10!\nHappy Hour drinks from 7pm.\nScreening 8:30pm.

SUMMARY:ShowNews Academy – NETWORK
DESCRIPTION:Each month ShowNews presents a film at Academy Cinemas picked by a special film industry guest. For April\, writer/producer Steve Barr has chosen NETWORK \nTickets only $10!\nHappy Hour drinks from 7pm.\nScreening 8:15pm. \nIn 1976 two of the key players in the Golden Age of Television\, writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sidney Lumet\, delivered a coruscating attack – at once savage and hilarious – on the medium that made their names. \nSINCE THIS SHOW WAS THE ONLY THING I HAD GOING FOR ME IN MY LIFE\, I’VE DECIDED TO KILL MYSELF. \nTo speak Chayefsky’s Oscar-winning dialogue\, Lumet enlisted a powerhouse cast list\, including Faye Dunaway\, William Holden\, Peter Finch (as ‘the mad prophet of the airwaves’ Howard Beale)\, Robert Duvall\, Ned Beatty and Beatrice Straight. Five of them would be nominated for Academy Awards\, three would win. \nI’M GOING TO BLOW MY BRAINS OUT RIGHT ON THIS PROGRAMME A WEEK FROM TODAY. \nAs well as its four Oscars\, NETWORK was also garlanded with a quartet of Golden Globes\, a BAFTA and numerous other awards. In the years since its release\, its reputation has only grown: the Library of Congress granted it a place on their prestigious National Film Registry; the American Film Institute named it as one of the greatest American films of all time; and the Writers Guild of America declared its screenplay one of the ten best of all time. It remains a true classic.

DESCRIPTION:To kick 2024 off\, Brenda Kendall has chosen the 1954 Fellini classic LA STRADA. \nLA STRADA won the Oscar in 1957 for Best Foreign Language Film. \nFrom Wikipedia. \nLa strada (The Road) is a 1954 Italian drama film directed by Federico Fellini and co-written by Fellini\, Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano. The film tells the story of Gelsomina\, a simple-minded young woman (Giulietta Masina) bought from her mother by Zampanò (Anthony Quinn)\, a brutish strongman who takes her with him on the road. \nFellini described La Strada as “a complete catalogue of my entire mythological world\, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever”.[1] As a result\, the film demanded more time and effort than any of his other works\, before or later.[2] The development process was long and tortuous; there were problems during production\, including insecure financial backing\, problematic casting\, and numerous delays. Finally\, just before the production completed shooting\, Fellini suffered a nervous breakdown that required medical treatment so that he could complete principal photography. Initial critical reaction was harsh\, and the film’s screening at the Venice Film Festival was the occasion of a bitter controversy that escalated into a public brawl between Fellini’s supporters and detractors. \nSubsequently\, however\, La Strada has become “one of the most influential films ever made”\, according to the American Film Institute.[3] It won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1957.[4][5] It was placed fourth in the 1992 British Film Institute directors’ list of cinema’s top 10 films.[6] \nIn 2008\, the film was included on the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage’s 100 Italian films to be saved\, a list of 100 films that “have changed the collective memory of the country between 1942 and 1978.”[7
