SUMMARY:Lighting Masterclass with DP Aaron Morton and Gaffer Scott Harman
DESCRIPTION:The NZCS is excited to kick off our 2025 Professional Development Program with a Masterclass in Auckland with our President\, internationally respected DP Aaron Morton NZCS\, who is around for a short time before he heads to the USA to prep a project. \nIn association with the NZCS Major National Sponsor\, Xytech Lighting Rentals\, Aaron and Gaffer Scott Harman will host a practical lighting presentation\, from 10.00am to 3.30pm\, on Sunday March 2nd with a lunch-break around noon. \nAaron and Scott will demonstrate a variety of lighting approaches\, and techniques using models\, props and practicals\, and there will also be a chance to view some newly-released lighting units courtesy of Xytech. This will be an opportunity for Aaron to pass on knowledge about how he has developed his personal style\, and how he approaches the challenges of the craft. The session will reveal insights such as why Aaron still considers a light meter one of his most important lighting tools and why he prefers to operate a camera in the thick of the drama\, rather than be stuck in a DIT tent. \nThis course is aimed at our more experienced cinematographers. There are only 20 places available\, so we are opening up pre-sales to NZCS Cinematographer Members first and will release to the general membership in the following 24 hrs. Register quickly\, as we anticipate a high demand. \nCost is $160 for NZCS Cinematographer Members – 24 hr pre-sale. \nPlaces are limited to 20 so exclusive to NZCS members only. \nDetails of the venue will be e-mailed to registrants. Lunch and morning/afternoon tea will be provided. \nMorning session will be 10.00am- 12.00pm\, lunch from 12.00pm to 1.45pm\, afternoon session from 1.45pm – 3.00pm \nAny enquiries please email pd@nzcine.com

SUMMARY:Doc Edge Clinic: Local Lens\, Global Reach: The Power of Place in Filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:Join U.S. director Thaddeus D. Matula (“Into the Spotlight”) in “Local Lens\, Global Reach: The Power of Place in Filmmaking” as he unravels the art of storytelling and the architecture of narrative structure. Discover how compelling stories thrive on the foundations of “but\,” “therefore\,” and “meanwhile.” Thaddeus\, a storytelling vessel\, compares his approach to carving out the transcendent truth hidden within reality\, much like Michelangelo’s pursuit to free the angel from marble. \nThis talk isn’t just about filmmaking; it’s about the universal language of passion that resonates with all. Thaddeus will share insights on connecting with subjects’ passions\, staying open to opportunities\, and nurturing connections to illuminate the human experience through cinema. \nFor filmmakers in Christchurch and beyond\, “Local Lens\, Global Reach” is a beacon of inspiration\, reminding you that the power to touch hearts and change minds through storytelling lies within you\, no matter where you are. Thaddeus’s journey illustrates that with passion as your compass and storytelling as your craft\, you can create films that resonate globally from your very location. \nIn addition to speaker Matula\, full details of the day’s programme will be advertised soon. \nMatula’s film\, “Into the Spotlight\,” takes the spotlight as our December Film of the Month in the Virtual Cinema. But here’s the exciting part: you can watch the film either on the big screen or online. Plus\, you’ll have the chance to meet the director in person in Christchurch and Auckland. \nChristchurch at Lumiere Cinemas on Saturday 2 December at 4.30pm\nAuckland at The Capitol Cinema on Sunday 3 December at 2.30pm
