And we need to do that with scripted as well as non-scripted content/formats. We’re good at both.
I also agree that TVNZ and RNZ working together more closely is a good thing. I’m pleased that the government is supporting that idea. In his latest letters of expectation Minister Goldsmith says he wants RNZ to play a stronger role as a national broadcaster, TVNZ to deliver on public media outcomes, and both organisations to identify opportunities to work together.
I think we need to see public funding for our screen content not as grants but as investments in our culture, our society and our democracy – and in our creative economy.
NZ On Air actually takes an equity stake for any funding of $200,00 or more.
The funding agency and producers need to see themselves more in partnership with each other – to deliver on both public media outcomes and commercial opportunities. We have for too long been talking about those two things as though they are mutually exclusive but they’re not.
Basing screen commerce primarily on selling advertising slots for targeted demographics is a limited business model, and it’s increasingly unviable as advertising heads off to social media and user-generated content.
Basing screen commerce on other income streams such as subscriptions and international sales helps to broaden the scope of what we create.
Let’s have a strong public media screen organisation that treats its viewers as citizens with advertising-free content and also as subscribers with other content; a funding agency that treats its producers as business partners; and the industry as a whole treating the world as our market.

More than that, she has been incredibly successful in her own screen industry endeavours. We should be listening to people like this.
